Sarah Burton: Parents still find it difficult to discuss sexual health issues

This research shows that at least some of the health messages we try to give to children and young people are actually getting through.

Parents are usually more confident about discussing issues such as smoking and alcohol with their children.

Sexual health can be more difficult for them to talk about.

This research shows that the controversial or ignored areas are the ones where we are not having the positive significant impact we would hope for.

While there are some positive messages, there is still more to do, particularly in areas such as increasing physical activity for children. While the messages are simple, it can be difficult to take up opportunities for exercise, because of a lack of effective access to sports facilities or outdoor spaces.

It is easy to give out the health message, but it is more challenging to make it easy to change behaviour. Quite often children and adults know plenty of health messages; they just don't always act on them.

What is really important is to learn more about what has contributed to positive change.
