As the country has faced challenges of food poverty, isolation, poor mental health, members of Rotary have stepped up.

Men and women who volunteer with Rotary in the West of Scotland went into action to help fight the effects of Lockdown; they have never stopped.

Now their 2021 district conference is open to everyone and free of charge. It is online, with a line-up of inspirational and motivational speakers focusing on overcoming personal human challenges.

The four speakers highlighted below and others will bring their own lived experience, or the focus of their life’s work, to the table.

Corinne Hutton – founder of Finding your Feet

In June 2013 Corinne nearly lost her life when a cough turned into pneumonia and sepsis. Surgeons were forced to amputate both her hands and her legs below the knee to save her life. She’s since set up a charity to support individuals and their families and has gone on to smash several world records as she proves there is life after limb loss.

David Duke MBE – founder and CEO of Street Soccer Scotland

Less than 10 years ago David was homeless … but he turned his life around and went on to form Street Soccer Scotland, which helps develop positive change through football.

Ashley Scotland – chief executive, Thriving Survivors

Ashley will share her life story of a woman who was trapped in life with no meaning, purpose or hope, until she discovered research on trauma and recovery. It’s a story of the journey from the dark days of rape, domestic abuse and agoraphobia to developing her own toolkit for recovery.

Tom Griffin, President, Rotary Great Britain & Ireland

Scot Tom was born, bred and studied in Glasgow before his work saw him become chief executive of a number of councils in England. Now retired, he leads, Rotary in Great Britain and Ireland, a dynamic organisation which tackles challenges head on, including how to be flexible and versatile in a changing world.

Leader of Rotary in the West of Scotland Angela Samson said: “I chose the theme of this year’s conference as Challenges, and this year has certainly been that. Our speakers however should inspire and motivate us all to keep striving to meet and beat our challenges whatever they may be with the help of our friends, families and the support of our Rotary organisation”.

The event is on Saturday, April 24th April, from 1.30pm. You can register for the event here. Learn more from our Facebook Page or email us at [email protected]
