Power stations ‘had asbestos dust a foot deep’

A GRANDFATHER of seven, Ian Drew was exposed to asbestos during 32 years in the energy industry, starting in Dalmarnock, in Glasgow.

For Mr Drew and his workmates it was a regular part of their daily life.

“Conditions in Dalmarnock would have been just as bad as they were at any other place,” the 73-year-old said.

“I would be standing in asbestos a foot deep and every time I moved – it was always warm there – it would raise up in clouds of dust.

“I worked at various power stations and the story was always the same.

“It was well into the 1970s when appropriate steps were taken to protect workers, but by then it was too late.”
