Piers Morgan tested for COVID-19 after showing symptoms

Piers Morgan has been tested for coronavirus after showing symptoms.

The Good Morning Britain host was advised to have a test for COVID-19 after taking ill.

The 55-year-old TV presenter will not returning to the show until he has received results.

Mr Morgan said he is taking an “abundance of caution” despite his symptoms being mild.

On twitter he said: “On medical advice, and out of an abundance of caution for a mild symptom that arose in past 48hrs, I’ve had a test for COVID-19 and so won’t be working on Good Morning Britain until I get the result back, which should be tomorrow.”

Journalists are classed as key workers and, like all broadcasters, Morgan has been respecting social distancing rules while on air.

At the beginning of April, he revealed his 19-year-old son Albert was believed to have had the virus, losing his sense of taste or smell, but was now OK.

It’s not yet known who will replace Piers on the show.

News of the TV host came as the Department of Health said 315 more people had died in UK hospitals, care homes and the wider community, the lowest figure in a day since March.

It means the total number of fatalities in the UK stands at 28,446.
