Only one NHS case of faulty implants

Extensive checks have found only one woman in Scotland who was given the faulty PiP breast implants on the NHS, the Health Secretary has revealed.

Nicola Sturgeon told MSPs that the Scottish Government has recently been advised that one patient from NHS Highland received the implants from St John’s Hospital in 2006. The faulty implants contain non-medical grade silicone. .

She said: “Our extensive checks have not identified any further patients who had PiP implants on the NHS. Therefore with this one exception, the position remains that no NHS patients were affected.”

However, as many as 4,000 women in Scotland may have been given the implants by private companies.

They were manufactured by the now-closed French company Poly Implant Prothese (PiP) and could be toxic if ruptured.
