Mother tells of ‘weird cry’

A mother has described “the weirdest cry” from her baby after the infant had taken ill and been rushed to hospital.

The woman, 30, told a jury that the 11-week-old girl had gone in an ambulance to Raigmore Hospital, Inverness, and she arrived by car to see “all these people surrounding her.”

She added: “It was horrible. This really shrill, piercing cry, the weirdest cry. I saw the state of her and I was all over the place.”

Derren Maclennan, 41, of Manse Crescent, Tain, Easter Ross, denies attempting to murder the child on 23 February, 2010, at a house in the town. The High Court in Edinburgh heard that a 999 call had been made after the woman saw the baby “blowing bubbles” with her eyes held shut. The trial continues.
