Masterton Primary: Pupil at Fife school tests positive for Covid-19

A pupil at a Fife primary school has tested positive for coronavirus, NHS Fife has confirmed this afternoon.

In a message to parents at Masterton Primary in Dunfermline, the regional health board said the child continued to suffer from “mild symptoms” of Covid-19 and was self isolating at home along with other family members.

NHS Fife insisted that there was “no evidence” of further coronavirus transmission within the school, adding that the risk to other pupils and staff “remains low.”

Despite the reassurance, pupils in one class at Masterton Primary are being contacted by the NHS Fife’s Test and Protect team.

Parents of children in P3/4 at the school are being advised that they must self-isolate for two weeks, from September 4 to September 18 - and cannot return to school until Monday, September 21 if they are symptom-free.

NHS Fife told families that anyone experiencing the established symptoms of Covid-19 to arrange testing using the UK Government Citizens’ Portal or by calling 0800 028 2816.

The news comes as First Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced the deaths of three more confirmed coronavirus patients this afternoon – the first time three deaths have been recorded in one day since June 30.

It brings the total number of Covid-19 fatalities to 2,499.

This represents 2.3 per cent of people newly tested, down from 2.4 per cent yesterday.

Of the new cases, 91 are in Greater Glasgow and Clyde, 32 in Lanarkshire and 16 in Lothian.

There are 267 people in hospital with confirmed or suspected Covid-19, an increase of 11 in 24 hours.

Of these patients, six were in intensive care, up one.
