Major boost for Monty’s Maggie centre fund

PLANS by golfing legend Colin Montgomerie to raise the £3 million needed to build a cancer care centre in Aberdeen in memory of his late mother received a substantial boost yesterday.

The former Ryder Cup Captain visited Offshore Europe, the oil and gas industry’s annual showcase, to accept a £300,000 donation from oil service company BG Group.

The donation has taken the total raised halfway to the appeal’s target, only 15 months from its launch.

Monty’s Maggie’s Appeal was established to bring a Maggie’s Centre to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary for families affected by cancer across the North-east. He has dedicated his fund raising campaign in memory of his mother Elizabeth, who died of cancer in 1991.

He said yesterday: “This marks a major milestone in the campaign and is the largest donation we have received. We are almost halfway to our target and that is incredible considering the financial climate.

“We are absolutely delighted [at] such incredibly generous support. We are moving ever closer to realising our vision of creating a Maggie’s Centre in Aberdeen, and giving people with cancer the support they need from the centre’s unique, caring environment.”
