A family which has been at the heart of Edinburgh’s healthcare for six decades has returned to its original roots.

There has been a Fairfield testing people’s hearing, fitting hearing aids and looking after aural healthcare in the city since 1969, when David Fairfield and his wife Ella set up their business in Stafford Street.

Many years later, son Stephen (now 55) and daughter Ruth Porteous (59), joined the business, continuing the family traditional of offering exceptional customer service in a warm and friendly setting.

After a brief spell out of the industry, Stephen and Ruth are back with the new brand Fairfield Hearing, operating out of the same Stafford Street premises as their father began in 1969, with a real feeling of having come home.

Stephen says the gap in service, co-inciding with the pandemic lockdown, showed him just how much he missed the hearing sector, and he was delighted to start again.

“The Fairfield family has been helping people with their hearing for six decades now,” he said. “Our customers tell us of their parents or grandparents having been helped by my later father years ago.

“Ruth and I are delighted to be carrying on that family tradition; we really feel we are part of Edinburgh’s history and are very pleased to be taking care of our customers for the years to come.

“Our ears are such a personal thing, we find people like to come to a family business, and appreciate the personal service we deliver.”

Proud to be an independent specialist, operating out of spacious Georgian premises in Stafford Street, Hearing Healthcare is not tied in to any one manufacturer.

Stephen added: “That means we can always provide exactly what is the right solution for each customer.”

He is a qualified dispensing audiologist with more than 30 years of experience and will assess, measure and fit to suit the client’s hearing needs, while Ruth is an aural care practitioner, looking after year-round hearing health, from wax removal and cleaning to specialist imagery.

The practice is situated in Stafford Street, just off Shandwick Place in the west end of the city, with easy bus and tram access, and good on street parking.
