Glasgow tops obesity league

Scotland’s biggest city was the unhealthiest place in the UK last year, according to a study.

Almost four in ten Glaswegians were classified as being obese or morbidly obese, the Nuffield Health charity found. The city also had the biggest proportion of smokers (29 per cent) and came fifth in a list of UK locations where people get the least sleep.

The study collected data from about 40,000 people keen on improving their fitness. It found that 36 per cent of men and 31 per cent of women in Glasgow were obese, having a body mass index of over 30, and 5.1 per cent were morbidly obese, with a BMI of over 40. The normal weight range is 18.5 to 24.9.
