Five more people test positive in Scotland bringing the total to 16

Five more people have tested positive for the coronavirus in Scotland bringing the total number to 16.

Two new cases in Lanarkshire and an increase of one case in Lothian, Greater Glasgow and Clyde and Grampian have been reported, the Scottish Government confirmed.

So far 1,680 tests have been conducted in Scotland with 1,664 coming back negative.

The increase matches the jump seen yesterday, the biggest in a single day since the first reported case on Sunday.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has said she expects the number of people diagnosed with Covid-19 - the illness cause by this type of coronavirus - to increase "very rapidly" in the coming days.

One of the cases confirmed in Scotland is known to be a member of the Scottish female rugby team.Scottish Rugby made the announcement yesterday and confirmed the women's Six Nations match scheduled to take place at the Scotstoun Stadium in Glasgow against France was cancelled.Seven players and team staff were forced to self-isolate following medical advice.The stadium and adjoining leisure centre were also closed following the announcement.It is understood the player, who has not been named, had used the facilities and the decision was taken to close it down as a precaution.

The Department of Health said more than 21,000 people had been tested for the virus in the UK. A daily update of figures on its website said: "As of 7am on 7 March 2020, 21,460 people have been tested in the UK, of which 21,254 were confirmed negative and 206 were confirmed as positive. Two patients who tested positive for Covid-19 have died."
