Experts issue cancer alert

cancer experts have issued fresh warnings about skin cancer after the number of cases soared.

Cases of malignant melanoma have shot up across Scotland in the past ten years. In the Lothians they have also risen over the decade, with 168 cases reported in 2010, compared with 102 in 2000. But the Lothians figures are showing a downward trend, after new cases peaked at 194 in 2009.

Yinka Ebo, senior health information officer at Cancer Research UK, said: “It’s worrying to see that cases of the most serious type of skin cancer are still on the rise.”
