Update on plans for fans attending Scotland's Euro 2021 games given by Scottish Government
Economy minister Fiona Hyslop confirmed there were no plans for the games currently scheduled to take place in Hampden in Glasgow to be moved by UEFA, and congratulated Scotland’s men’s team on reaching the finals of the competition.
Scotland will face the Czech Republic at the stadium in an effective home game on June 14, with Croatia also facing the Czechs in Glasgow on June 18, before Scotland return to their home stadium to face Croatia on June 22.
It is not yet known how many supporters will be allowed in the stadium itself for the games, but Ms Hyslop said “event fan zones” were part of plans for the games.
She told MSPs in Holyrood: "The Scottish Government is working closely with our event partners, the SFA, Glasgow City Council, Police Scotland and Events Scotland in preparation for the matches at Hampden next summer.
"In response to the Covid situation, we are also considering a range of planning scenarios for the tournament including the supporter attendance at the stadium and event fan zones.
"We look forward to welcoming the Czech Republic and Croatia to Hampden and I am particularly delighted that Scotland’s men’s national team will be there too.”
Reacting to media speculation that the games in Scotland may be cancelled and the competition moved to one single country – reported to most likely be Russia – Ms Hyslop said UEFA was not planning on changing the format of the competition.
Such a move would see a major change to schedules for teams and deny Scotland fans the chance to see their heroes play in their first major championships in 22 years on home soil.
Ms Hyslop said: “UEFA intends to hold Euro 2020 in the format and the venues confirmed earlier this year with 12 cities across Europe.
"In response to the recent media speculation, UEFA has reiterated that there are presently no plans to change any venue and the Scottish Government and our event partners are in regular dialogue with UEFA.”
