Nicola Sturgeon has responded to the allegations that the Prime Minister’s chief advisor broke lockdown to travel to Durham while his wife was symptomatic.

The First Minister tweeted: “I know it is tough to lose a trusted adviser at the height of crisis, but when it’s a choice of that or integrity of vital public health advice, the latter must come first.

“That’s the judgment I and, to her credit, Catherine Calderwood reached. PM and Cummings should do likewise.”

Ms Sturgeon’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr Catherine Calderwood, was caught breaking lockdown at the beginning of April and resigned after the breach was reported in the press.

The Observer and The Mirror broke the story on Friday evening that Dominic Cummings travelled from London to Durham to self isolate, and on Saturday evening, revealed allegations that Mr Cummings had made the trip more than once during lockdown, with an eye witnesses placing him at Barnard Castle, 30 miles from Durham, on Easter Sunday.

Downing Street has denied the latter part of the allegations, and claimed that Mr Cummings did not break the rules stating that he had travelled to seek help with his four-year-old child after his wife caught the virus, and he successfully “stayed put for 14 days” before returning to London.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson will be hosting the Daily Briefing at 5pm on Sunday after calls within the Tory party for Mr Cummings to be sacked.
