During her daily briefing, she responded to Jason Leitch’s message where he asked Scots to prepare for a ‘digital Christmas’ saying Scotland’s national clinical director was just trying to be ‘frank’ with people.

She said: “This is tough stuff. Jason Leitch is trying to be frank with people about the reality we live in and not prematurely rule things out but equally not try to give people false assurance, it’s difficult balance.”

Ms Sturgeon confirmed the Scottish Government is working hard to allow the nation to celebrate Christmas in the most normal way possible in the context of the pandemic.

She added: “The more chance we stick to these rules, the more chance we can do that.

“Some of the tough decisions we are deciding right now will also be in part about trying to deal decisively with an upsurge in a virus now so that we give ourselves the best chance at greater normality at Christmas – that’s part of the objective we are aiming for.

“Christmas this year, probably for no country anywhere, is going to be absolutely normal without restrictions.

“I could stand here and tell you otherwise but that’s not the right approach.

"If Christmas day was tomorrow it would be pretty harsh what Id’ have to ask people to do, but Christmas is some time away.”
