Nicola Sturgeon coronavirus briefing: Why there is no briefing on Tuesday, and how First Minister will update Scotland instead

There will be no lunchtime coronavirus briefing from the First Minister on Tuesday. Instead, Nicola Sturgeon will give an afternoon update from Holyrood on where each local authority area in Scotland sits in the five-level system.

Today’s weekly briefing, which is expected to take place around 2pm, will be the first since Ms Sturgeon confirmed that 11 regions would be placed under level 4 restrictions – the strictest of the country’s five tiers of restrictions.

On Friday approximately 2.3 milion people were placed under the rules with the City of Glasgow and much of the Central Belt among the affected areas.

The First Minister has signalled she will not announce many changes to lockdown in her statement to parliament on Tuesday.

No areas are expected to be moved up a level, with 11 central belt councils to remain in level four until December 11.

On Monday, Ms Sturgeon told the Scottish Government’s coronavirus briefing the “overwhelming majority of local authority areas will remain in the current level”.

East Lothian moved down to level two at 6am on Tuesday, but Midlothian is to remain at level three due to concerns about a rise in cases in recent days.

Ms Sturgeon’s address to MSPs will be broadcast live on The Scotsman and Edinburgh Evening News, as well as on BBC Scotland and Scottish Parliament TV.
