New lockdown rules: how restrictions have changed in Scotland as the country enters phase 1 - and guidance on seeing family and friends

Several lockdown measures are to be relaxed in Scotland from Friday (29 May), following the Scottish government’s latest review

The Scottish Government announced a series of changes to rules following its review on 28 May, with First Minister Nicola Sturgeon confirming the country will enter phase one of its four-phase plan.

However, despite the easing of some restrictions from Friday (29 May), people in Scotland are still being urged to "stay at home as much as possible", with Ms Sturgeon warning that the virus "is still out there".

Scotland is set to move to Phase 1 of its four-phase plan following the 28 May end-of-cycle review of coronavirus regulations, with changes to the rules will coming into force from 29 May.

The changes mean outdoor work and construction will be allowed to resume, and garden and recycling centres can reopen for business from Monday 1 June

Drive thru food outlets will be also permitted to gradually reopen to customers.

Teachers will be allowed able to enter schools from 1 June, and from Wednesday 3 June, childcare will be available to a wider group of people.

However, schools in Scotland will reopen later on 11 August, but children will return to a "blended model" where they will do a mix of school and home learning.

Family and friends in Scotland are permitted to meet up outdoors from 29 May, providing social distancing is maintained.

Only one household can meet with another household at a time and there should be no more than eight people in a group at once, with meetings advised to be limited to just one other household in a given day.

While people from different households are still not allowed to meet indoors, it is acceptable to walk through a house to gain access to a garden.

Scots are now allowed to travel to different areas for recreation, although Ms Sturgeon asked people to get there by walking or cycling as much as possible and to avoid public transport. However, people are advised not to travel further than five miles from their home.

Some outdoor leisure activities, where physical distancing can be maintained, will resume from Friday (29 May), with activities including golf, tennis, bowls and fishing.

People can now sit out and sunbathe in parks and open areas, but Ms Sturgeon warned that if people see crowds of gathered in outdoors, they are encouraged not to join them.

The First Minister said that she was ‘nervous’ about announcing these changes, and asked the public to make sure that they stick to them.

She advised people to use their judgement to avoid another spike, stating: “We do not want people flocking to beauty spots and tourist hot spots.”

Ms Sturgeon also confirmed that she will cancel lockdown easing if people aren’t following the guidelines, although she added that she has “enormous trust and faith in the Scottish people.”

She warned: "The virus is still out there - lockdown is being modified slightly, but it is not over.”
