LNER chief pays tribute to 'Edinburgh' rail worker who died after catching coronavirus

London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) managing director, David Horne, paid tribute to his employee, referred to only as ‘Tam,’ in a twitter post this afternoon.

A spokesperson for LNER confirmed that the staff member had tested positive for coronavirus and had an underlying health condition.

Posting a picture of the worker on Monday, Mr Horne wrote: “Remembering Tam.

“My thoughts are with Tam's family and friends.

#StayHomeSaveLives”

It is believed that the rail worker was based at Edinburgh Waverley, with dozens of messages of condolence from LNER colleagues sent to his family on the twitter thread beneath Mr Horne’s post.

One person, David Woodford FRAS, wrote: “Please pass on the condolences of everybody at TPE Newcastle to Bob and the team at Edinburgh. Heartbreaking.”

Another, @1701aStarship, wrote: “RIP Tam Edinburgh Waverley.”

And Jim Egan said: “So sorry to hear that a member of the railway family has succumbed to this dreadful virus.”

A LNER spokeswoman said: “It is with great sadness that we confirm one of our colleagues has passed away after testing positive for coronavirus, having also had an underlying health condition.

“Our deepest sympathies go out to their family and friends. LNER is providing support to family and colleagues at this difficult time, and we ask that their privacy is respected.”
