Coronavirus in Scotland: NHS confirms first Covid-related death in the Western Isles

The first Covid-19-related death in Western Isles has been reported by the NHS.

The death of a resident at the Sacred Heart Care Home in Daliburgh follows a coronavirus outbreak in Uist.

In a joint statement, NHS Western Isles and local authority Comhairle Nan Eilean Siar said the resident died about three weeks after testing positive for the virus.

The statement said: “Following the positive test all care was carried out using the appropriate personal protective equipment in order to reduce the risk of transmission of infection to either other residents or staff.

“Residents are tested routinely for Covid-19 twice a week, and the past three sets of results have shown no positive tests amongst residents."

Coronavirus cases on the Western Isles had risen to more than 50 in recent weeks.

Scotland has recorded 13 deaths of coronavirus patients in the past 24 hours.

This takes the death toll under this measure to 2,585.
