Coronavirus restrictions: Scottish mum who cannot see critically injured son posts heartfelt pleas to Nicola Sturgeon

A mother has implored the First Minister to let see her 17-year-old son in hospital after he was left in a critical condition following a collision with a car.

The South Lanarkshire woman, who goes by the name Wee Debbie on Twitter, tagged Nicola Sturgeon in the police appeal post appealing for witnesses to the incident that left her child in surgery.

The incident happened around 10.40pm on Saturday, September 26 on Motherwell Road near Palace Grounds Road in Hamilton

A green Fiat 500 was involved in a collision with the 17-year-old cyclist who was riding a black mountain bike.

The 17-year-old is now in critical condition in the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Glasgow.

Hospital visiting regulations have left the mum desperate to get permission to see her child.

His mother posted the police appeal and added: “Nicola Sturgeon, this is my son.

Nicola Sturgeon responded to the heartfelt plea from the Lanarkshire mother.

“He's 17, I can't even get to hold his hand when he's critically ill.

“I am begging you as a mother whose heart is breaking to let me into hold my son's hand.

“He's had major surgery on his head, he needs his mum. PLEASE.”

The First Minister responded to the message, writing: “I am so sorry about your son - and of course you want to hold his hand.

“I’ve asked Jason Leitch [National Clinical Director of the Scottish Government] to contact you straight away.

“Thinking of you.”

Monica Lennon, MSP for Central Scotland for Scottish Labour party also commented saying: “Debbie, thinking of you and your family at this difficult time.

“I am one of your MSPs so please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you need anything.”

Police in Hamilton are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward.

Sergeant Craig McDonald, of Road Policing, said: "We're appealing to anyone who might've witnessed this incident or noticed the cyclist or green Fiat 500 shortly before the incident happened.

"I'd also ask drivers who were in that area around 10.40pm on Saturday to check their dashcam footage."
