Coronavirus in Scotland: NHS denies ‘nurse’ claim that 400 vaccines were binned due to ‘no-shows’

It follows a message read out on BBC Radio Scotland’s Drive Time on Monday, from someone claiming to be an NHS bank nurse, saying that the temporary Louisa Jordan Hospital in Glasgow had 400 people fail to turn up for the vaccine on Saturday.

The message, read by host John Beattie, said: “400 no-shows at the Louisa Jordan on Saturday. No end of viable doses are being instructed to be destroyed at the end of the day.”

The host added: “We have no confirmation of that.”

However, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde has denied the claims.

In a statement, it said: “There is no truth to these claims.

"We had staff on standby who were able to take up unused appointments, allowing us to keep wastage to an absolute minimum.

“The NHS Louisa Jordan Hospital has played a vital role in staff vaccination and this will continue as one of 16 community centres.

"We have had a very high uptake of the vaccine and have already vaccinated many thousands of health care staff, care home staff and residents and people over 80 years of age.”

37,000 staff have now been vaccinated at the hospital with the health board saying the number of people who miss vaccines is ‘extremely low.’

Their spokesperson added: “NHSGGC’s efforts to protect communities against COVID-19 have been following the priority list agreed by the Scottish Government and the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI).”
