Coronavirus in Scotland: 'I like the idea of being able to have a nice drink in a beer garden' says Nicola Sturgeon ahead of lockdown easing announcement

The First Minister has admitted that she likes the idea of being able to have a ‘nice drink in a beer garden’ ahead of the coronavirus briefing where she is expected to announce ‘significant easing’ of lockdown restrictions.

Ms Sturgeon also said that she did not want to be the ‘voice of doom’, noting the increase in covid cases across India as an example of the virus ‘not going away.’

The news comes as Ms Sturgeon will announce the easing of lockdown rules at midday on Tuesday.

Speaking ahead of the briefing, she told Radio Clyde: “Like everybody else, I like the idea, over the next week or so, of being able to have a nice drink in a beer garden.

“Hopefully, the weather will be nice.”

"However, we need to continue to take this seriously- not be complacent- so that we can enjoy these changes and keep moving in the right direction.”

The First Minister added that there was a sense of things ‘slowly but surely getting back to normal’ across Scotland.

Taking place at St Andrew’s House, Nicola Sturgeon will lead the briefing accompanied by Chief Medical Office Dr Gregor Smith and National Clinical Director Jason Leitch.

The event will also be live-streamed across the Scottish Government Twitter page.
