Coronavirus in Scotland: 692 cases of coronavirus recorded in past 24 hours

A total 692 cases of coronavirus and 3 deaths have been recorded across Scotland in the last 24 hours, Nicola Sturgeon announces during the last First Minister’s Questions ahead of the May elections.

The 692 new cases represents 3.1 per cent of all tests carried out and takes the total number of confirmed cases up to 215,075

321 people are in hospital, 20 fewer than yesterday, with coronavirus.

31 people are intensive care, 3 more than yesterday, with the virus.

Sadly, 3 deaths have been registered of people who first tested positive with the virus.

This takes the total number of deaths registered under the daily measurement up to 7,562.

However, the National Records of Scotland have just published its weekly update which includes cases where covid is a suspected or contributory cause of death.

This shows that by Sunday the total number of registered deaths related to this wider definition is now 9,897.

65 of those deaths were registered last week which is 39 fewer than in the week before and represents a fall of more than 50% in the past two weeks.

Ms Sturgeon said: “This is very welcome evidence that the vaccination programme is now reducing deaths in the community as well as in care homes.”

At her briefing this afternoon, Nicola Sturgeon conveyed her condolences to everyone who has suffered a bereavement.

The First Minister announced that as of this morning, 2,249,612 people had received a first dose of vaccine- an increase of 34,940 since yesterday.

By the end of today, Ms Sturgeon said the country is ‘on track’ to give a first dose to more than half the adult population.

The First Minister said this is “a very significant milestone.”

13,581 people received a second dose yesterday bringing the total number of second doses in Scotland to 249, 252.

From today, Public health Scotland are publishing a daily breakdown of first and second doses within priority groups six- comprising of adults with a particular underlying health condition and unpaid carers.

The First Minister also announced that ‘virtually all’ over 65 year olds have now had a first dose of the vaccine and so have 93% 60-64-year-old age group, 63% of 55-59 year-olds and 41% of 50-54 year-old.
