Coronavirus in Scotland: 1,875 new cases recorded today as total number of deaths with Covid rises above 5,000

Scotland has recorded 54 deaths from Covid-19 and 1,875 positive tests in the past 24 hours, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said.

Speaking the Scottish Government’s daily coronavirus briefing on Tuesday, Ms Sturgeon said this figure is particularly distressing, as it takes the total number of deaths with Covid over 5000 deaths.

It brings the death toll under this measure – of people who first tested positive for the virus within the previous 28 days – to 5,023.

Speaking during the Scottish Government’s daily briefing, Ms Sturgeon said 153,423 people have now tested positive in Scotland, up from 151,548 the previous day.

The daily test positivity rate is 12%, up from 11.5% on the previous day.

Of the new cases, 607 are in Greater Glasgow and Clyde, 280 in Lanarkshire, 214 in Lothian, and 162 in Ayrshire and Arran.

There are 1,717 people in hospital confirmed to have the virus, up 53 in 24 hours.

Of these patients, 133 are in intensive care, an increase of seven.
