A third consultant at Murrayfield’s private Spire facility was also tested but returned a negative result.

All three travelled together to Italy for a skiing holiday.

The pair are the first confirmed cases of medics in the UK contracting the potentially deadly COVID-19 virus.

Hospital bosses have written to all staff giving assurances none of the three medics have entered the hospital since returning to the Capital.

A source said: “Three consultants went to Italy last week and on their return two, it’s been notified, two have positive testing for coronavirus.

“But none of them have been into our hospital or within our grounds since returning from Italy.”

The Evening News was told the three consultants were on a skiing holiday with their families in Italy.

It was unclear where the two positive cases are being treated last night or whether the third is in self-isolation at home.

Many of the Spire’s consultants also work within the NHS and it was unclear whether any of the three involved had worked in other hospitals since their return.

Founded in 1984, the Corstorphine Road hospital delivers a range of private healthcare working with leading consultant physicians and surgeons.
