But the Government clarified the positive cases could come from as many as six days over the Christmas period, although they were unable to confirm the exact time period.

Seven deaths were also reported.

The latest figures show 14.4 per cent of the total number of tests came back positive overnight, according to the Scottish Government.

Sixty-five people are in intensive care with recently confirmed coronavirus and 1,092 people are in hospital.

A Scottish Government spokesperson said: “We should be extremely cautious about drawing conclusions from the data over the festive period. There were significantly fewer tests carried out over this period, with more tests on 23 December than 24-26 December combined.

“It is likely that fewer people with milder symptoms came forward for testing over the festive period, making analysis of trends difficult. We would urge the public not to delay getting tested over the holiday period if they have symptoms.”

Since the start of the outbreak, 4,467 people have died who have tested positive for coronavirus.

A total of 6,298 deaths have been registered in Scotland where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate up to December 20.

Forty per cent of Covid registered deaths related to deaths in care homes, 54 per cent were in hospitals and 6 per cent were at home or non-institutional settings.

It comes after overall coronavirus cases surpassed 120,000.

Out of those tested for Covid-19, 122,786 have tested positive, a steep rise from the 1,895 previously recorded.
