Woman saved from flat fire

A WOMAN had to be rescued from the second floor of a Leith tenement block following an early morning fire.

The 31-year-old escaped from the smoke-filled building by climbing down a fireman's ladder after a blaze broke out in the basement flat in Iona Street at about 7am on Saturday.

She was taken by ambulance to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary suffering from smoke inhalation.

Another resident was also lead out of the building by fire crews but did not require medical attention.
