University outlines plans to launch tourism degree

A SCOTTISH university is proposing a new degree to deliver better-qualified graduates for the tourism industry.

The Batchelor of Arts (BA) degree in tourism and hospitality practice has been proposed by the prospective University of the Highlands and Islands in consultation with tourist agencies.

Students would do much of their learning while working in a range of posts, including guest-houses, restaurants and resorts.

The proposals will be outlined to 50 delegates attending a conference in Inverness today.

Philip Riddle, chief executive of VisitScotland said:

"It is crucial that we continue to develop and nurture the next generation of tourism entrepreneurs, from hoteliers and chefs to transport operators and tour guides, and that is exactly what this course would do, bringing economic benefits not only to the Highlands and Islands, but across Scotland."

UHI is hopeful that the proposed new degree will be ready to start in September next year, subject to validation.
