A UNIVERSITY chaplain who married more than 550 couples has retired.

The Reverend Jamie Walker was chaplain at the University of St Andrews for 18 years.

He arrived in 1993 to take up a five-year term as chaplain, but ended up staying a further 13 years, dedicating much of his time to supporting both staff and students of the university.

Prior to his official retirement, Mr Walker was awarded the University Medal for his exceptional contribution to the well-being of the university.

University Proctor Lorna Milne said, “In his time at St Andrews, Jamie provided a listening ear and support for staff and students alike.”

Mr Walker said: “It has been a great pleasure being University Chaplain for 18 years. There have been many heart-warming times, but also some heart-wrenching times. To be alongside people in all of these moments has been an incredible privilege.”
