Top award for city professor

THE University of Cambridge has awarded one of its oldest and most prestigious prizes to an Edinburgh University professor.

The Adams Prize is awarded each year to a UK-based researcher doing first-class international research in mathematical sciences.

This year's topic was "fluid mechanics", with the prize being awarded to Professor Jacques Vanneste of the School of Mathematics at Edinburgh University.

Professor Arieh Iserles, chairman of the Adams Prize adjudicators, said: "Prof Vanneste's work spans fundamental issues underlying our understanding of geophysical fluid flow."
