Support call for child literacy

MSPs are being asked to support specialised projects aimed at improving children's literacy.

Educational psychologists say support should be extended for schemes in areas including North Lanarkshire, West Dunbartonshire and Edinburgh that identify children needing help at a young age.

Jean Campbell, chairwoman of the Scottish Division of Educational Psychology, said: "Failure to acquire basic literacy skills can blight a child's life, diminishing their long-term life chances and impacting upon their sense of well-being and achievement in school.

"Educational psychologists across Scotland have an important role to play."
