Students and staff pledge to cut emissions

STUDENTS and staff at Edinburgh University have pledged to cut their carbon emissions by 10 per cent this year.

The university's energy centres have cut CO2 emissions by 10 per cent in five years, but it aims to match this in just one year.

The focus has moved from carbon reductions on campus – which account for just one fifth of the university community's carbon footprint – to the activities of all 37,000 students and staff.

The university's 10:10 campaign culminated with the unveiling of a three-metre sign made out of recycled aluminium.

Vice principal Mary Bownes said: "We have invested heavily in energy efficiency projects, but we seek to engage our most valuable resource – our staff and students – with this issue, too."
