Scottish universities tuition fees income up by 9%

THE amount of income Scotland’s universities received from tuition fees rose 9 per cent to £780 million last year, new figures show.

Details released by the Higher Education Statistics Authority (HESA) show overall income in 2012/13 rose 6.3 per cent to £3 billion, with tuition fee income up from £722m.

Edinburgh University received £174m in fees and education contracts, the highest amount of any Scottish institution and up from around £150m the previous year.

Glasgow University received the second highest amount (£110m), while the figures for Aberdeen, Dundee and St Andrews were £47m, £40m and £63m respectively.

While Scots do not pay fees to study in their home country, those from elsewhere in the UK pay tuition of up to £9,000 a year, while students from outside the EU pay considerably more.

According to HESA, tuition fees and education contracts now account for 26 per cent of Scottish universities’ income, with the rest coming frmo funding body grants (35.3 per cent), research grants (21.1 per cent), other income (16.3 per cent) and endowments and investments (1.2 per cent).
