Scotsman Archive: New Companies in Scotland, 4 January, 1950

IN SPITE of difficulties and uncertainties experienced in industry and commerce in the post-war period, there are still many evidences of that energy and enterprise so characteristic of Scottish business concerns.

This is seen not only in schemes for the expansion of existing establishments but in the setting up of new industries, some of these being of the lighter type so badly needed in those areas which hitherto have been largely dependent for employment on the heavier industries. In the past year 700 new companies have been registered, the total capital amounting to 11,166,789, and while that falls short of the record figure of 28,445,924 in 1920 it is still a substantial addition to Scottish enterprise.

In 143 registrations new companies took over established businesses or parts of them. The total number of companies show a decrease, compared with 1948, of 57, and total nominal capital a decrease of 313,701. Average capital per company in 1949 was 15,952:10s; in 1948, 15,166.
