Rise in students accepted into Scots universities

MORE than 38,000 students have won a place to study at Scottish universities this year, new figures show.

Figures released today by admissions body Ucas show 38,870 people have been accepted on to courses for 2013 entry, up marginally on last year.

The number of Scots accepted rose by one per cent, while there was a two per cent rise in acceptances for English students. The number of students from the EU (except the UK) fell by five per cent.

Across the UK as a whole 459,750 have been placed in higher education, up six per cent on the same point last year.

Mary Curnock Cook, UCAS’ chief executive said: “More applicants have been placed to date through the Clearing process (43,400) than in previous cycles. Of these, 8,770 have been placed after applying late in the cycle directly to Clearing - this is 25 per cent higher than last year.

“Although the busiest part of Clearing has passed, recruitment for this autumn is continuing with 2,420 applicants placed in the past 24 hours, including 1,170 through the Clearing process.”
