Reading delay ‘no advantage’

CHILDREN who are not taught to read until they are seven learn at the same pace as a four-year-old, researchers have found.

The study by psychologists at Warwick University contradicts the theory that older children learn to read more quickly.

Researchers compared the literacy skills of children who had been formally taught in a state school from the age of four with those taught in Steiner schools, where formal literacy teaching is only introduced when a child is seven years old.

There are four Steiner schools in Scotland, in Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Moray, which offer an alternative to the national curriculum.
