Pupils speak their minds

BUDDING orators from eight Lothian schools have argued their way to the second round of a prestigious national debating tournament.

Pupils were asked to pick over the motion “this house believes that the right to privacy is more important than the freedom of the press” in a bid to progress through the Law Society of Scotland’s Donald Dewar Memorial Debating Tournament.

Local schools through to the second round of the regional heats are: Glenalmond College, Livingston; Stewart’s Melville College; The Royal High School; The Mary Erskine School, George Heriot’s School; Fettes College; James Gillespie’s High School; and Linlithgow Academy.

The next heat will take place in January, before the semi-finals in early spring.
