Princess Royal becomes chancellor

SCOTLAND’S newest university has appointed the Princess Royal as its first chancellor.

The University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI), a partnership of 13 colleges and research institutions, gained full university status in February.

The role of chancellor will be both ceremonial and ambassadorial and will see the princess conferring degrees at graduations as well as representing the university in the UK and overseas.

James Fraser, the UHI principal, said the institution was “delighted” the Princess Royal had accepted the invitation to be chancellor.

She has already visited many of the campuses.
