Pepsi to remove school drinks

PEPSI plans to remove sugary drinks from schools worldwide, after the success of programmes in the United States aimed at cutting down on childhood obesity.

It said it would remove full-calorie, sweetened drinks from schools in more than 200 countries by 2012, marking the first such move by a major soft drink producer.

The World Heart Federation has been negotiating with companies to have them remove sugary beverages from schools for the past year.

Scottish schools already have a ban on fizzy drinks as part of a government drive to cut obesity.
