In a statement, the fire service said: “Two appliances were immediately mobilised from Coatbridge Community Fire Station and crews reached the scene to find the roof of the building on fire.

“The school had already been safely evacuated and there are no reports of injuries.

“Firefighters were strategically positioned around the site and have been using multiple high pressure jets to douse the flames.

“The fire has affected the entire building and police officers have evacuated residents of nearby homes as a precautionary measure due to the presence of smoke within the area.”

The school will close on Friday, North Lanarkshire council said. The smoke from the blaze is reportedly affecting rush hour traffic on the M8.
