Learning festival aims to teach the curriculum

PARENTS in the Capital will get the chance to see the new Curriculum for Excellence in action at a special learning festival.

An "education village" will be set up to showcase the very best of the new curriculum by demonstrating how it is being delivered in city schools.

All of the Capital's schools will be represented and pupils and teachers will present examples of the curriculum in action.

The new curriculum has come under fire from teachers, unions, politicians and parents in recent months amid claims teachers have not been given enough help to implement it and parents do not understand what it is.

The festival is designed to tackle these issues and give parents a "jargon-free" look at what it actually does.

City education leader Councillor Marilyne MacLaren said: "Curriculum for Excellence has been a seismic shift in the way schools deliver learning and teaching and Edinburgh is at the forefront of driving it forward.

"Our schools are embracing the principals of the new curriculum and I am confident we are making rapid progress. It is important that everyone with a stake in this t complex of projects are clear about what it means and are bought into benefits."

The Festival of Learning takes place on 28 and 29 May at the Edinburgh Hilton Grosvenor.
