Gordonstoun reveals new head

THE deputy head of one of England's leading public schools has been appointed as principal of Gordonstoun.

Simon Reid, who recently served as acting headteacher at Worksop College in Nottinghamshire, will officially succeed Mark Pyper as headmaster of the elite Moray school when he retires in April next year.

The appointment of Mr Reid at the school, which counts the Prince of Wales and Zara and Peter Phillips as former pupils, followed an international search to find a successor to Mr Pyper who played a major role in ridding Gordonstoun of its reputation as an austere establishment of cold showers and early- morning runs.

Professor Bryan Williams, the chairman of the board of governors, said:

"I have no doubt that Gordonstoun will continue to thrive under Simon Reid's tenure. An impeccable educational background, outstanding leadership qualities and an affinity with the school's unique curriculum make Mr Reid ideal for the post."

Mr Reid, who was educated in South Africa,

has specialised in teaching English and taught in South Africa at Brentwood School, at Stowe, and at Christ's Hospital School , where he was a housemaster.

In 2004, he moved to Worksop College as deputy head and recently served as acting head of the co-educational private school.

He said last night: "I am obviously delighted and regard it as a great honour to take over the reins, which will be in about nine or ten months' time."
