Glasgow Caledonian University backs down on resit charge plan

UNIVERSITY bosses have decided against introducing fees for those re-sitting exams after a protest by students.

According to student leaders, Glasgow Caledonian University had proposed a £40 charge for anyone doing a re-sit, and an increased fee of £300 for those re-sitting a module.

However, the proposal was dropped following a campaign by students, which included lobbying members of the university’s executive board and a “No Re-Sit Fees” petition.

Matte Andrews, president of Glasgow Caledonian University Students’ Association, said: “We welcome the university’s decision to re-consider its proposals to charge students to repeat exams and modules.

“By listening to the hundreds of students who signed the petition, the university has hopefully learned that it must consult with students before making these types of decisions. I sincerely hope that this issue will not be raised again.”

A spokeswoman for the university said: “The question of new or increased charges for re-sits and re-taken modules has been reviewed in the wider context of the Academic Policy Committee addressing assessment regulations from an academic perspective (the Committee does not consider fees).

“Against this background the executive board decided that no change to current arrangements should be introduced. That means there will be no re-sit fees and the structure of the schedule of fees will remain unchanged for re-taken modules.”
