Foam fight closes St Andrews Uni raisin weekend

A GIANT foam fight has marked the traditional student welcome at the former university of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, St Andrews.

Hundreds of freshers pelted each other with shaving foam at St Salvator’s Quad in St Andrews, the messy end to the annual “raisin” weekend at Scotland’s oldest university.

Newcomers are taken under the wing of more senior students who host a welcome party. Tradition dictates they present their “parent” with a pound of raisins as a thank-you, though these days it is more likely to be a bottle of wine.

The custom ends the following day with a procession and foam fight in the heart of the campus.

Students were warned this year that any illegal or disruptive behaviour would put the future of the tradition at stake.

St Andrews was founded in 1413.
