Fewer pupils excluded

THE number of pupils being excluded from Scottish schools has fallen sharply in the past five years.

Figures published yesterday showed there had been a total of 26,844 exclusions in 2010-11, compared with 42,990 in 2005-6.

The figures from 2010-11 included 26,784 temporary exclusions and 60 pupils being removed from the school completely and having to study elsewhere.

More than 99 per cent of exclusions are for a fixed period, with such pupils expected to return to their original school once that period is complete.
