Ex-St Andrews University principal dies at home

PROFESSOR Struther Arnott, principal of St Andrews University from 1986 to 1999, has died at his home in Doncaster at the age of 78, the institution has announced. The academic was an expert in the structure of DNA.

In a message to university colleagues, Louise Richardson, current principal and vice-chancellor, said the professor was “widely regarded as an intellectual giant whose decisive and robust style of management laid the foundations for what has become a world-renowned science faculty in St Andrews”.

She added: “Struther Arnott was a principal who . . . believed that St Andrews could and should be the equal of the best in the world.”
