Cubie questions students’ readiness

A LEADING lawyer who has played a key role in shaping Scotland’s education sector has said there are “serious questions” about how prepared school and university leavers are for the workplace.

Sir Andrew Cubie, a former chair of CBI Scotland and the man responsible for the 1999 inquiry which led to the abolition of up-front tuition fees for Scottish students, made his comments ahead of a conference due to take place in Edinburgh today.

Organised by the Scottish Parliament’s Futures Forum and the Goodison Group in Scotland, the one-day event will feature leading business people, educationalists and academics as well seeking the input of young people.

Sir Andrew, who will address the conference, said: “The onus has to be on business leaders and educationalists to work effectively together to ensure a competitive, agile and skilled workforce, fit for purpose through to 2025 and beyond.”
