The council is seeking current and former pupils, aged between 14 and 20, to take up the role of youth commissioners who will take the lead in reshaping and modernising approaches to bullying in local secondaries.

Councillor Isobel Davidson, the chair of the council’s Education, Learning and Leisure Committee, said: “This project has the potential to bring huge benefits to all of our pupils across Aberdeenshire, and I look forward to seeing how it progresses.”

Dawn Lynch, a strategic development officer who is leading the anti-bullying initiative, explained: “All Aberdeenshire schools have well established bullying policies. Many have developed innovative and effective practise which makes a positive impact if bullying behaviour is displayed, and we commend their proactive approaches.

“We are committed to ensuring that the strategic framework which supports this is as good as it can be. Getting involved in this project provides a unique opportunity for interested young people to make a difference within their communities.”

A council spokeswoman said: “The youth commissioners will take the lead in developing the project, but will have access to support from an advisory panel of interested and experienced professionals.

“Young people who have been bullied, who have themselves bullied others, or who have witnessed bullying behaviour are all welcome to apply. All that is required is a real interest in making a positive change.

Applications to join the youth commissioners must be submitted by 14 June. Once the youth commissioners have been recruited, an induction session will be held in early July.”
