Classical music drives young drunks away

A THEATRE is using the soothing sounds of Bach and Mozart to combat antisocial behaviour.

The Brunton Hall, in Musselburgh, has begun blasting out the classic music following complaints about drunken teenagers gathering at night, and staff have already reported a large drop in the number of youths congregating at the rear entrance.

The speakers are playing at the back of the venue, where an overhang has been used as a shelter.

The musical concept has already been used in other parts of the Lothians, with Port Seton's Co-op playing classic tunes to discourage youngsters.

An East Lothian Council spokesperson said: "It's less invasive than using high frequency devices and we felt it was more suited to an arts venue. We consulted with neighbouring residents and the response to the idea was positive."

Alan Hay, vice-chairman of Musselburgh and Inveresk Community Council, added: "It's really good to see the council make a proactive response."
