Derek Curran has already been suspended from his post at Castlebrae Community High in Edinburgh – a move the city council described as a “precautionary measure”.

The allegation is understood to have come from a pupil who is not a student at Castlebrae.

Mr Curran was moved from Forrester High last year on a one-year secondment as part of an attempt to revive the fortunes of Castlebrae, one of the country’s most under-performing schools.

Staff at the school are understood to have been told about the decision to suspend him on Monday.

Police initially said they had been “made aware” of the situation by the council, but yesterday confirmed they had launched an investigation.

A police spokeswoman said: “Police have received a report of allegations against the headteacher at Castlebrae High School and are currently carrying out an investigation.”

Castlebrae was allowed to remain open last year, despite being less than a third full, after parents campaigned to save it.
